Disability & Neurodiversity Advocacy (DNA)
The club Disability and Neurodiversity Advocacy, or DNA, was founded in Fall 2021 by three Moravian students who wanted to foster change both of structures and of minds. As a club, we strive to advocate for ourselves as disabled and/or neurodiverse people, and advocate for others who identify as such.
The name itself was created deliberately to include a range of identities: those who identify themselves as being disabled or divergent, with or without an official diagnosis, those who are unsure of their identity, or those who are not a part of these communities necessarily but wish to advocate for it nonetheless–all are welcome. The term ‘disability’ is also all-encompassing in that we define it as any condition that forces a person to make adaptations in order to function within the larger society. Neurodiversity, itself being a part of disability, includes neurological conditions that are characterized as deviating from the neurotypical or the “norm”.
Our Mission
Our mission is to facilitate discussion on topics of disability and neurodiversity so that there is both awareness and acceptance of these identities. We aim to develop a present community of disabled and neurodiverse people at Moravian and provide a
safe space in which people are able to take pride in their identity. We strive to create an environment in which everyone feels welcome to learn about themselves and others, and create a newfound sense of understanding.
